Primer Hands On: Training for Leaders in Building Effective Systems of Care
The National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health (TA Center) offers the Primer Hands On Training on a biannual basis, generally in the Fall and Spring of each year. This training targets leaders across child-serving systems and stakeholder groups who already play influential roles in the development of systems of care for children at-risk for or with serious emotional disturbances and their families. Through a two-day training, leaders will learn how to use the organizing framework and strategic approach laid out in Building Systems of Care: A Primer to advance system building at the state, territory, tribal, and community levels. After completing the training, participants will be given training materials to use in their work with other groups. Participants will be asked to join a network of leaders who have completed past trainings.
The training is an exciting capacity-building initiative designed to build a network of key leaders who are trained in a detailed understanding of what it takes to build effective systems of care. Based on Building Systems of Care: A Primer, by Sheila Pires, the training covers the structure and elements of effective systems of care and the strategic processes essential to engaging partners in systems building.
The training will cover in depth material from the Primer, including:
- Effective engagement of states, tribes, communities and organizations in building systems of care;
- A strategic approach to system building;
- Critical elements of effective system building processes;
- Key functions that need to be structured in systems of care;
- The pros and cons of different structural approaches; and
- How process and structure affect the experiences of those involved in system building and outcomes.
Applying for Primer Hands On Training
Up to twenty-five participants are selected from the pool of applicants to participate in the training and are generally selected to ensure a balance and blend of diverse participants and stakeholder groups. As training dates are determined, a link to an application form will be created which interested parties complete and submit in order to be considered for participation. Applicants who are not selected for the training are put on a list and are given priority consideration for a future Primer Hands On Training.
There is a $390 registration fee for the training which covers both days of training, trainers, all materials, and breakfast, lunch, and afternoon break snacks on the training days.
Participants will be responsible for all of their expenses in attending the two-day session. This includes transportation, hotel, meals and miscellaneous expenses.
